Shaving and waxing away unwanted facial and body hair is thing of the past. Laser Hair Removal Chicago, Old Town Med Spa brings to you the most advanced technology in laser hair removal that can offer a long term solution. The laser emits a light at a specific wavelength that is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle, the light is converted to heat energy, which destroys the hair follicle so that it will not produce another hair. Our laser is the fastest and most effective hair removal laser available. This is because the physical “spot size” or treatment area for the device is larger than other laser: just under 1” x 1 ½”. In contrast, other hair removal lasers have spot sizes around half inches in size. It has Advanced Contact Cooling system that protects the skin and keeps clients comfortable throughout treatment.

Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt?
Most people don’t describe laser hair removal as anything more than uncomfortable. That said, there are a few factors that can influence your treatment experience. One is your personal pain threshold. Another is the area on which we perform your laser hair removal. Some areas, like the upper lip, may be more sensitive than areas like the arms.
Fortunately, there are ways to reduce the discomfort that can occur during laser hair removal. First, for women, it’s beneficial to schedule treatments one to two weeks after menstruation, at a time in the menstrual cycle when the natural pain tolerance tends to be higher. Another tip is to avoid sun exposure or anything that makes the skin more sensitive. Finally, talk to your provider about ways that they can make you more comfortable during your visit.
How Do I Prepare for Laser Hair Removal Treatment?
Before your laser hair removal treatment, we’ll perform a thorough consultation with you and an examination of your complexion and skin. This helps us confirm that you are a good candidate and should face few risks.
To prepare your skin for laser hair removal, you should:
- Avoid all forms of tanning, from lying out in the sun to using a tanning lamp to applying sunless tanning lotion. No tanning!
- Avoid the use of topical products that increase your skin’s photosensitivity. Examples include retinol, benzoyl peroxide, and even some essential oils.
- Talk to your provider about oral medication you use, including supplements. Those that can cause photosensitivity may need to be stopped a few weeks before treatment.
- Do not schedule injectable treatments like Botox or dermal fillers, nor microdermabrasion or chemical peels, in the two weeks before laser hair removal.
- Avoid waxing and plucking the hair in the intended treatment area. Shave the area the night before your laser hair removal treatment.
- Shower the night before or the morning of your laser hair removal treatment but do not apply any topical product to the skin
How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
Laser hair removal targets the hair follicles using pulses of precise laser light. The light gets absorbed by the pigment in your hair, vaporizing individual strands of hair by the hundreds. The vaporized hair passes thermal energy to the walls of the hair follicles, causing destruction at the follicle root. This disables the follicle from producing new hair.
This process only works on the hair that is actively growing in the follicles at the time of treatment. More hair is already growing but is in a dormant phase. This is why it’s necessary to complete an entire series of treatments to achieve prolonged results.
How Many Treatments are Needed?
We tailor treatment to you! This will be based on the contrast between your skin and hair and the technology we’re using to laser away those unwanted hairs. Generally, laser hair removal can take from five to 12 treatments. Keep in mind that it’s important to stay on track with your recommended intervals of sessions. These are usually scheduled four to eight weeks apart to get the best results.
